UK’s first Green Gilt raises £10 billion for green projects
Green projects across the country are set to benefit from funding from the UK’s first ever Green Gilt, which will help drive progress to net zero and create jobs across the UK. £10 billion was raised from the initial sale this week, and a minimum of £15 billion is expected to be raised from future sales. The funding will be used for green government projects such as zero-emissions buses, offshore wind and schemes to decarbonise homes and buildings in this financial year.
Government secures agreement to ensure CO2 supplies
An agreement with CF Fertilisers has been made to ensure the continued supply of CO2 to UK businesses – an essential component of the national economy. The exceptional short term arrangement will allow the company to immediately restart operations and produce CO2 at its Billingham plant. The Government will provide limited financial support for CF Fertilisers’ operating costs for three weeks whilst the CO2 market adapts to global gas prices.
More than £50m approved for City Deal low carbon programme
The UK and Welsh Governments have approved the £58.7 million Swansea Bay City Deal’s Supporting Innovation and Low Carbon Growth programme. Close collaboration with industry, government and academia is key to its success by delivering low carbon, sustainable and inclusive economic growth through creating the right environment to develop new technologies from the research stage, through to production, to support job creation in the region. Projects include:
- Bay Technology Centre
- South Wales Industrial Transition from Carbon Hub
- Advanced manufacturing production facility
- Hydrogen stimulus project
- Air quality monitoring project
- Low emission vehicle charging infrastructure
Plans outlined for £2bn transport network investment
A £2bn plans has been outlined to transform the West Midlands’ transport network. The plans include extending the West Midlands Metro network in Walsall, Birmingham, Dudley, Sandwell and Wolverhampton, as well as new rail stations, new rapid bus services, more zero-emission vehicles, a very light rail line, and safe cycling routes.
£220 million to help big-emitting industries reduce fossil fuel use
Businesses in some of the UK’s most polluting and energy-intensive industries will be able to bid for a share of £220 million in government investment to help cut their carbon emissions and the costs of their energy bills. The funding is available for industries within England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
