Small businesses benefitting more than ever from government business, new figures reveal

UK small businesses won more work from the government than ever before in 2021/22. The government awarded £21bn worth of contracts to SMEs, showing its support for the sector. This total is £1.7bn higher than the previous year and marks the fifth year in a row that the government has increased its spending with small businesses.

New building requirements for separate male and female toilets

As part of its regulatory reforms, the government has revealed it will introduce new rules that will require all new public and private buildings, that are not for domestic use, to offer separate toilets for women and men and/or a self-contained, private toilet at the very least.
These changes will affect new build contracts, while also potentially creating new opportunities for renovations.

£250 million to boost NHS capacity with 900 new beds

The NHS is to receive a £250m investment from the government to increase capacity and help speed up patient care this winter. 900 new beds will be created in hospitals, which includes over 60 intermediate care beds, as well as better assessment spaces and cubicles in A&E. Some examples of schemes are the conversion of unused non-clinical space into 72 hospital beds at Peterborough City Hospital, which will cost £12.5 million, and the creation of a 32 bed modular acute medical ward at Northwick Park Hospital in London, which will cost £22.6 million.

City Deal approval for £44m project at former Clyde oil terminal

The Glasgow City Region Cabinet has approved a £44m project to redevelop a former oil terminal on the Clyde’s shores. The site in Bowling, West Dunbartonshire, which belonged to ExxonMobil, will become a mixed-use industrial and commercial area. The project will cover 47 acres of the 150-acre site, while the remaining land will be used for “green infrastructure enhancements” such as a waterfront path for pedestrians and cyclists.

Belfast and Cork join forces on solar heating project with Shared Island funding

A rooftop solar heating project is being carried out by Belfast and Cork with funding from the Irish government’s Shared Island Fund. The project will involve three tasks, which have received Shared Island funding of €35,000. These are a solar photovoltaic (PV) technology assessment of 10 council buildings in both cities, a desk-based solar PV rooftop assessment of some Belfast City Council-owned properties, and a study on the potential for docklands regeneration in both cities with a focus on innovation, tourism, culture, and heritage.

The estimated value of the contract is €1,708,750 over the 5 years contract term. The estimated budget for the contract will be subject to the annual government estimates and budgetary process in each of the years in question which are subject to change. £500m Immersive, Simulation and Related Technologies Dynamic Purchasing System

The NHS Long Term Workforce Plan describes the need to expand training, improve retention and reform education delivery, including through expanding the use of simulation and improving the adoption of immersive technologies. NHS LPP on behalf of NHSE are leading on the procurement to implement a new Dynamic purchasing System (DPS) as a compliant route to market for buyers and commissioners. The vision is to develop a new national agreement for simulation, extended reality (XR) and other related technology providers focusing on education and training services.
