In the news this week

£15 million for education technology in Welsh schools next year
The Welsh Government has announced that it will invest a further £15m towards providing educational technology for schools in the next financial year. The funding is a continuation of the Hwb EdTech programme, which has seen over £92m of investment over the last two years.
So far, the Hwb EdTech programme has seen:  
◆ The provision of 128,000 devices since the start of the pandemic, with 54,000 to be delivered in the coming weeks
◆ 10,000 re-purposed devices issued to ‘digitally excluded’ learners
◆ 10,848 MiFi devices for learners without internet access at home
◆ 300,000 digital infrastructure products, including cabling, switches and WiFi devices

Council approves spending £1.7million on new cycling route through Ancoats
Manchester Council plans for a new £1.7m city centre cycling route have been approved. The plans for a cycle route were not included in the original £9.1m upgrade of Great Ancoats Street, which is in the final stages of completion. A £2.3m pedestrianisation plan was also signed off for the Northern Quarter of Manchester, which will see temporary street closures made permanent with new footpaths built in.
In total the projects will have created over £13m worth of opportunities, and is part of the culture change across the UK to provide spaces with greater social distancing and to encourage more active transport.

Government to bring an end to unsafe cladding with multi-billion pound intervention
The government has announced that it is committing £3.5bn to pay for the removal of unsafe cladding on residential buildings 18 metres (6 storeys) and over in England.
The government also plans to reduce the need for EWS1 forms, introduce a ‘Gateway 2’ developer levy, and start a new tax for the UK residential property development sector – to raise at least £2 billion over the next decade to help cover cladding remediation costs.

Record year for UK’s £8.9bn cyber security sector
A new government report shows that the UK’s growing cyber industry attracted record investment last year, despite the global pandemic.

Councils urged to bid for extended electric vehicle chargepoints funding
Local authorities are being urged to apply for a share of £20m funding to increase the number of on-street electric vehicle chargepoints.
The On-Street Residential Chargepoint Scheme (ORCS) will cover 75% of the capital costs of procurement and installation, and is hoped to lead to 4,000 more chargepoints – doubling the number available across the UK.

2022 Commonwealth Games: Games Transport Plan
In preparation for the 2022 Commonwealth games, West Midlands Combined Authority are preparing a Transport Plan which will utilise over £320m of Transforming Cities Fund funding. The plan will address transportation of spectators, athletes and the Games Family, while at the same time ensuring any disruption to transport users is kept to a minimum.

£42 million to tackle congestion on the A630
Roads Minister Baroness Vere has given the go-ahead to a multi-million pound upgrade to the A630, which will cut congestion and boost capacity along the busy route into Sheffield. Work is scheduled to start in the coming weeks and expected to be finished by summer 2022.

Government launch £200m Port Infrastructure Fund
Ports will be able to access this fund for the creation of vital port infrastructure – including warehouses, control posts and traffic management systems.
The fund has been create to allow ports to function post-Brexit, where regardless of the outcome, infrastructure changes will be needed.

Johnson pledges £160m for offshore wind
£160m will be invested in upgrading ports and factories in England, Wales and Scotland, for the production of wind turbines. This commitment is part of the first stage of a 10-point plan for a “green industrial revolution”.
The plan aims to create 2,000 jobs in construction and support 60,000 established jobs.
With a major focus on significantly reducing emissions to net-zero before 2050 – expect to see many more significant Build Back Greener schemes.

A newly released PPN introduces requirements, from 1 January 2021, for Central Government buyers to evaluate their procurements and ensure they provide a significant level of social value. The 5 key pillars for evaluating social value are: COVID-19 recovery, Tackling economic inequality, Fighting climate change, Equal opportunity, and Wellbeing.

£80 million boost to towns across England
Over 100 towns across England will be be given up to £1m to support projects that will make a difference in the area. Projects highlighted include new green spaces, businesses spaces, greater pedestrianisation, and new community hubs to support those living alone.

Digital prescribing and records introduction boosted by funding
The government have announced £8.7m funding, across seven hospital trusts, to introduce digital records and e-prescribing capabilities. 130 NHS trusts already have similar systems, and as part of the NHS Long Term Plan, over £78m will be invested in introducing electronic prescribing systems across the NHS.

NHS opens bidding on £1bn PC and print framework

£30m funding injection to unlock land for new homes
The government has announced an additional £30m worth of funding to help kick-start the building of new homes. The funding will see £20m allocated to the Land Release Fund and £10m to the One Public Estate programme to help release surplus land for housing.
