It would help to finish key infrastructure projects for the big development site behind York Railway Station on time and to a high standard.
Two projects to improve walking and cycling facilities in Birkenhead have been approved by Wirral Council’s environment, climate emergency, and transport committee. One of them is a £9m scheme to upgrade Conway Street and Europa Boulevard, which has secured funding from the government’s Future High Street Fund and Active Travel Fund. The other one is a £3m scheme to enhance Grange Road, Charing Cross, and Grange Road West, which also received support from the Future High Street Fund.
Blyth’s Bridge Street will undergo a £2.7m makeover starting in September. The final scheme, which was designed and consulted with residents, businesses and key stakeholders earlier this year, will create a more attractive and accessible entrance to the town centre, as well as better walking and cycling routes to encourage active travel in the area. This project is part of the Energising Blyth regeneration programme, which aims to invest £90m to revitalise, connect and grow the town.
An ambitious all-Ireland rail plan proposes a train service that would connect Cork and Derry, spanning the whole country. Other routes would also link Galway and Derry, Cork and Ballina, Co Mayo and many other counties that currently have limited or no rail access. The All-Island Rail Review, which was jointly developed by Ireland’s Department of Transport and the Northern Ireland Department of Infrastructure, contains 30 major recommendations for improving rail services across the island.
