£40 million fund launched to unlock 5G benefits across the UK

A new £40m fund will support UK local areas to improve their digital connectivity and explore advanced wireless technologies. Local and regional authorities are invited to apply for a share of the fund, which could enable them to develop solutions such as smart healthcare systems, futuristic farming methods and intelligent transport networks that reduce congestion.

£43 million for A38 to tackle congestion and create jobs in Worcestershire

Work will begin soon on the A38 Bromsgrove to make it a better road for drivers and cyclists. The £43 million project, funded by the government, will improve a 4-mile section of the road by upgrading key junctions to ease traffic and cut travel times. The project will also enhance connections to Birmingham, Bristol and Gloucester.

£14 million to unlock agricultural innovation

Over £14 million is being made available in two new competition rounds to back research into innovative farming solutions.

New prison to be built on former Rainsbrook site

The government is turning the old Rainsbrook Secure Training Centre into a Category C prison for men, as part of its plan to increase jail capacity. This is one of the many actions that the government is taking to create 20,000 new prison places, which is the biggest prison-building project since Victorian times. Out of these 20,000 places, 5,400 have already been built.

New Beaulieu Train Station in Chelmsford will be built by Government

Chelmsford will get a new train station thanks to an agreement between the government and the council. The station will be built by a government body at Beaulieu Park, along with a new road that will bypass the northeast of the city. The project aims to ease traffic and reduce the pressure on the central Chelmsford station. The Beaulieu Park Station project will cost about £158m and be the first new station on the Great Eastern mainline in more than 100 years.

Doncaster Council set to get £3.4m funding for Balby cycle lanes

Balby, a suburb of Doncaster, could get £3.4m from the council to build new paths and lanes for cyclists. The project will cover more than 5.4 miles (8.9km) of roads, including the A60 through Wadworth Hill and Sandford Road. The project will also improve connections to Warmsworth for cyclists.

The big plan to save a beautiful town whose very existence is under ‘serious threat’ from rising sea levels

Aberaeron, a town in Wales, is facing a “serious threat” from rising sea levels that could wipe it out. The council has secured more than £30m from the Welsh Government to build a coastal defence scheme to protect the town. The scheme will start soon and will help save Aberaeron from the effects of climate change.

Third of council procurement spending goes to SMEs

In 2022, a new analysis reveals that SMEs received just over one-third of the total procurement spending by English local councils.

£30m Kinmel Bay Coastal Defence Improvements Prior Information Notice
